About

The Winthrop Education Corporation (WEC)  is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1995 to raise and provide funds for needs of the Winthrop school system which are not provided by local and state funding.

WEC promotes, supports, and sponsors educational, cultural, literary, civic, health,  vocational, co-curricular and social programs, activities, and events for residents and students of all ages in the Winthrop Region.  All requests for school funding are processed through the school administration.

We are governed by a volunteer board of directors.  The board meets regularly to oversee financial contributions, to discuss program needs, and to consider funding requests in support of the Winthrop school system.

The Winthrop Education Corporation assumed responsibility for the fundraising campaign designed to build a 500-seat performing arts center including an endowment to sustain cultural and educational performances. The overwhelming generosity of Winthrop citizens and organizations made this effort a reality which the Winthrop community and surrounding areas continue to support and enjoy.

Since embarking on our mission in 1995 to raise and provide funds for Winthrop schools that are not covered by the school budget, WEC has provided over $75,000 in grants to local teachers and programs.
